The Midnight Commander (also known as mc) is an open-source feature rich full-screen file manager designed to be simple and easy to use.

It's a text mode application that allows you to copy, move and delete files and whole directory trees, search for files and run commands in the subshell. Internal viewer and editor are included. Some of the main features of the Midnight Commander include:

  • A two-panel interface that allows you to easily navigate and manage your files and directories.
  • Support for a wide range of file operations, including copying, moving, renaming, deleting, and archiving files.
  • The ability to view and edit files, including support for syntax highlighting and automatic indentation for many programming languages.
  • The ability to view and manage the contents of archives, such as tar and zip files.
  • The ability to connect to remote servers using various protocols, including FTP, SFTP, and SMB.
  • The ability to customize the appearance and behavior of the midnight commander using a variety of options and configuration settings.
